You know about TED Talks, right? They are exciting and fascinating presentations from brilliant experts about important science discoveries and ideas of our time. They reach a global audience and contribute the spread of knowledge.
CHAD Chats are no different, except that they are presented by comedians about subjects in which they have very little formal training. And they happen in a bar. And they are hilarious.
Next Thursday, Nov. 10, catch Famous Author Mykle Hansen and local performers Dax Jordan, Virginia Jones, Christian Ricketts, and Reuben Nisenfeld speaking satirically and at length about Really Important Ideas. I will be facilitating the affair. Topics will include Ending Poverty through Facebook Statuses, Cats, Abraham Lincoln’s pants, Brain Chemistry, Everything, Nothing, and Carl Sagan.
Presentations begin promptly at 8pm on Thursday November 10th at THE SARATOGA BAR, 6910 N. Interstate. Full bar and menu. The bar’s monthly X-rated open-mic comedy (the Smutty Clown! which I also host alongside Sterling Clark) will follow. Good times will abound!
As someone with a lot of interest in the local Portland comedy scene, I feel it’s time to address an important institution in the community, one that is providing a grow number of comedians a place to practice their craft and develop their art. A place that is focused on quality and reaching out to as broad an audience as possible. I am referring, of course, to Applebee’s® Neighborhood Bar and Grill.
No fewer than three Applebee’s® Neighborhood Bar and Grills (Bars and Grills?) in town have been home to comedy at various points in the past year. There’s currently a fun weekly Monday night showcase at the Lloyd Center Applebee’s® run by ComedySportz folks. There have been shows at the Applebee’s® in Vancouver; it currently has a variety open mic on Thursdays that is seeking comedians.
And then there’s the Applebee’s® in Gresham, where Stage Left Entertainment has been succesfully bringing you their specialty–good clean family-friendly comedy–for a number of months now. And tonight they are bringing in local superstar Dax Jordan to headline. If you have not seen Dax perform or have only seen him adeptly hosting Suki’s, you need to fix that, because one day soon he will be famous and you will have to pay lots of money to get to sit in a huge theater to see him, and you will regret not having taken the opportunity to see him for free in an intimate setting with a plate of Won Ton Tacos in front of you. The show also features the extremely talented Nathan Brannon and Andy Schanz, so there is lots of #winning to be had all around. Show starts at 9:30. The Gresham Applebee’s® is located at 489 Northwest Burnside Road.
And comedy keeps rolling in from every side! If you like your stand-up farther north in the world and in a rowdyfun bar instead of a rowdyfun theater, then by all means get yourself to Boss Hawg’s on NE 102nd and Glisan. Lonnie Bruhn‘s awesome stand-up showcase has one decidedly killer line-up tonight, featuring Tim “The Hammer” Hammer, Shane “The Train” Torres, and Dax “The Reason for the Season” Jordan, getting in one last headlining set as a bachelor before his wedding tomorrow. Show starts at 9pm. $10 gets you in the door and two drink tickets, hot damn! Folks, there are seriously glorious comedy parties all over town tonight, do not miss out!
