New Ladies’ Comedy Festival “All Jane No Dick” accepting submissions!

Listed up, folks with more than one X chromosome! This September there will be a new all-female comedy festival in town, and submissions are open right now. All Jane No Dick, curated by the awesome Stacey Hallal, will take place Sept. 7-8 at Curious Comedy Theater and all around Northeast Portland. If you are a woman-type person in town who does stand-up, sketch, and/or improv, you are invited to apply. Submissions are open until June 18. Bucky Sinister & Moshe Kasher Both Reading from Their New Books This Weekend

It’s a cool weekend in Portland if you’re a comedy nerd who also likes written words. Two excellent comedians are coming through town to promote their new books in the next few days.

Today (Thursday), comedian/poet/writer/rad dude Bucky Sinister will be reading from his new book “Time Bomb Snooze Alarm” at Slabtown, 1033 NW 16th Ave. The even will also feature music & poetry. Fun starts at 7:30pm.

Then on Sunday, the hilarious Moshe Kasher will be reading from his new book “Kasher in the Rye” at Powell’s on Burnside starting at 7:30pm. There will be a Q&A afterwards. If you need more Moshe stand-up in your life — and really who doesn’t? — he’ll be performing at the Mission Theater with some local favorites the night before. [EDIT: And apparently Bucky is opening for Moshe on Saturday! Double trouble!]

The Liberators are Offering Milk & Cookies at the Brody this Saturday

Important snack update, gentle readers: this Saturday at their performance at the Brody Theater, local rad-socks sketch comedy troupe The Liberators will be offering homemade milk and cookies to their audience. This is a lovely homage to a great moment in live comedy history and also a really good idea because now I want cookies. As an added benefit you get to watch their excellent sketch comedy. Show starts at 7:30pm.

Laughter Against the Machine at Dante’s 4/19/12

Have you recovered from the most excellent Bridgetown weekend we just had? Hopefully so, at least enough to get up out of bed and head downtown, where you can catch the wonderful folks of Laughter Against the Machine at Dante’s on Thursday, April 19 at 8pm. LATM is serious political funny business, and W. Kamau Bell, Nato Green, and Janine Brito are all highly worth seeing. The show is part of the Bus Project’s Rebooting Democracy festival, so there will be people there willing to collect your address for the political system as well, good times. Tickets are $10 at the door and can also be purchased at www.rebootingdemocracy.org.

Hey folks, look alive! It’s Bridgetown season, but the amazing comedy in town is not limited to just those four magical days next week. For example, check yourself into Helium Comedy Club on Wednesday evening, April 11th, to see the extremely funny James Adomian record his first album. It’s being produced by the rad folks at Earwolf, and it will be hosted by the wonderful Shane Torres, so there are like seriously tons of reasons to go. Shows will be at 7 and 9:30. Shock Therapy: Benefit for Ron Shock this Saturday!

One of the great things about comedy is that comedians take care of their own. When storytelling great Ron Shock was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that bankrupt him and his family last year, comedians all over the country started organizing benefits. Here in Portland, led by the magical Kristine Levine, folks have put together not a comedy show but a storytelling showcase. So cool!

A whole boatload of awesome comedians will be telling their stories this Saturday at the Star Theater (13 NW 6th Ave). Local favorites Ian Karmel, Nathan Brannon, Tynan Delong, Belinda Carroll, Carmen Trineece and more!!

This night will be awesome and a unique chance to hear about parts of these comedians’ lives that rarely get discussed on stage. I will be there and I am very much looking forward to it. Show starts at 9pm. $7-$10 sliding scale to get in the door. You can buy tickets in advance from Brownpaper Tickets here.

Action Comics, New Monthly Showcase, Starts Friday 3/30

Action Comics is a super-powered comedy showcase full of hilarious villains, unlikely heroes, and whole lot of puns. Portland’s newest monthly stand-up showcase kicks off March 30 at 9pm at Action/Adventure Theater (1050 SE Clinton St). The show will feature the most creative and innovative performers in the local stand-up scene.

The first show this Friday will feature Kristine Levine (seen again being hilarious in the most recent season of Portlandia and hot off her performances at SXSW), Christian Ricketts (who recently advanced in Rooftop Comedy’s National College Comedy Comptition), Jen Allen, Mandie Allietta, and Danny Felts.

Donations of $5 or more requested at the door. Proceeds will support Comedy in Action, a new community project that aims to provide a space for developing comedians to share resources and ideas with each other. Currently housed in the Action/Adventure Theater, Comedy In Action opens its doors to members in early April.

10-Year Anniversary of the Boiler Room Open Mic This Monday 3/5/12!

OMG! The longest running mic on the west coast is turning 10 years old on Monday, and it’s Portland’s own Boiler Room! Come celebrate all of host Kevin-Michael Moore’s awesome work with a line-up that is sure to impress, including Dwight Slade, Kristine Levine and the prodigal Tim Hammer. Many folks including myself had their first time doing comedy at the Boiler Room. It’s an institution and I hope it keeps going for 10 more years. Show starts at 9pm but get there early, the place will be packed. Hit up the Facebook for additional info.
